On Saturday, 4 April, from 10 am to 2 pm, Forestville TT and PingPongParkinson Australia held a very special PingPongParkinson competition. It was a meaningful day that brought together players, families, supporters, and volunteers for an event that was about much more than table tennis.
From the beginning, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Helen Halford greeted all the players, spoke with them individually, and helped create an environment where everyone felt comfortable and included. We then gathered together with the players and their families to chat, listen, and share stories.
One of the most powerful parts of the day was hearing directly from participants and families about how table tennis has helped alleviate Parkinson’s symptoms and improve quality of life. These conversations reminded us that sport can do much more than build physical skills. It can create confidence, connection, routine, enjoyment, and hope.
After the welcome and conversations, we moved into a warm-up session with stretching and gentle preparation to get everyone ready for play. We made sure the playing area was set up with care, using four tables and leaving plenty of space around them. Barriers were placed near the back wall to help provide a safer environment and reduce hazards, so everyone could focus on enjoying the day.
While the competition itself was important, the real success of the event was the sense of community it created. This day was not only about matches and results. It was about inclusion, friendship, health, and giving people the opportunity to connect through sport.
PingPongParkinson is about creating opportunities, building confidence, and showing that sport can make a real difference in people’s lives. This event showed exactly that. It was a special day filled with encouragement, participation, and meaningful connection.
After the matches, everyone had the chance to relax and enjoy more conversation over food and fruit. It was a lovely way to finish the day, with people spending time together, sharing experiences, and celebrating the event.
Congratulations to Tony, who finished in first place. Well done also to Robyn for coming second, and David for coming third. Most importantly, congratulations to everyone who took part and helped make the day such a positive and memorable occasion.
We hope this is only the beginning. With continued support, this event can keep growing and reach even more people in the future.
